Mendelsohn and Mihalopoulos Lead JHU Over UC Merced and Austin

SOUTHLAKE, TX – Luke Mendelsohn notched seven points to lead Johns Hopkins to a 14-8 win over UC Merced Sunday morning. In the afternoon, Jason Mihalopoulos turned in an eight-point performance to pace JHU in a 30-5 win over Austin. The Blue Jays improve to 7-1 on the season after going 4-0 at the Austin Invitational.
 
Hopkins got goals from four Blue Jays, including two each Mihalopoulos and Owen Bartlett, as JHU took a 6-2 lead over UC Merced at the half. The Bobcats opened the third quarter with goals from Vincent Labonte and Evan Ladeairous to pull within 6-4 with 6:24 to go in the quarter.
 
The teams traded goals over the ensuing eight minutes and Hopkins led 9-7. Mendelsohn scored with 6:22 to play in the fourth to spark a game-ending 5-1 run.
 
Mendelsohn finished with a game-high four goals and seven points to go with five steals and two blocks. Bartlett, Mihalopoulos and Andrew Lee scored two goals each while Alec Baker handed out three helpers. Bartlett and Mason Hofmann had four steals each and Bartlett also blocked two shots. Lee also drew four ejections.
 
In the final game of the weekend, Hopkins raced out to a 5-0 lead in the game's opening 4:11. Greyson Gaworecki got Austin on the board at 3:18 to halt JHU's opening run. Patrick Rooney responded for the Blue Jays, scoring just 47 seconds later to ignite a 17-0 Jays' run. Ten Blue Jays scored during the run as they held the 'Roos scoreless for more than 16 minutes.
 
Sebastian Scheier got Austin on the board with a five-meter goal at 3:00 in the third. That kick-started a run of the teams swapping scores and JHU led 25-5 with 5:33 to play. Phillip Long scored a five-meter goal for the Blue Jays to start a game-ending 5-0 run as the Jays took the 30-5 win.
 
Mihalopoulos led the Blue Jays with six goals and eight points. Hofmann added four goals, two assists and three steals. Gavin Brooke (3g, 2a) Matthieu Giauque (3g, 2a), Daniel Palfi (2g, 3a) and Baker (2g, 3a) notched five points each. Chris Poisler tallied a career-high 15 saves and four assists in the cage.
 
The win over Austin marked Hopkins' second game with 30 or more goals this season. The Blue Jays' 7-1 start since the 2015 season when JHU also won seven of its first eight.
 
Hopkins returns to action next weekend at the Bruno Invite. JHU will take on fifth-ranked Chapman (12 pm) and eighth-ranked MIT (3:45 pm) on Saturday.
