Widen's Game-Winner Lift Hopkins Past York, 1-0, in Overtime

Blue Jays Win Fourth Straight

YORK, PA – Sophomore Julia Widen redirected home a pass from senior Grace Waldeck with 1:44 remaining in the second overtime period to lift the third-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team to a 1-0 win at 14th-ranked York Wednesday evening.  The win is the fourth straight for the Blue Jays, who improve to 5-1 with the victory.  The Spartans had a four-game winning streak snapped and slip to 4-2.

It took nearly 20 minutes of overtime to settle the 11th all-time meeting in series history with the Blue Jays capitalizing on the extra open space available in overtime to grab the win.

After Abby Smith turned away a Kaitlin Coward shot, the Blue Jays drew a restart at the top of the circle.  It was Cameron Thiesing who threaded a pass to Waldeck deep in the circle to Smith's right and she backhanded a pass across the crease that Widen got a stick on and directed into the open goal for the game-winner.

The 60 minutes of regulation solved nothing as neither team could crack the other, although both teams had chances to win before extra time came into play.

The Blue Jays drew three first-quarter corners, but couldn't cash in and it was actually the Spartans who picked up three of the four shots in a first quarter that saw both goalies, Hopkins' Aubrey Kilgore and York's Smith pick up a save.

After neither team seriously threatened in the second quarter, both took turns owning a period in the second half.  The Blue Jays collected four shots in the third quarter with Smith turning away a pair of offerings and Becca Olsen picking up a pair of defensive saves for the Spartans in a four-minute stretch to keep the game scoreless.

The script flipped in the final period with York generating all three of the game's shots in the period, including a pair of late chances by Olsen and Claire Burrows that Kilgore was able to steer clear to keep the game scoreless and send it to overtime.

In the first 10-minute extra session and 8:44 of the second, the Blue Jays would collect four corners and send five shots at Smith, including four in the second extra period with Widen's second career goal proving to be the difference.

York held a 12-11 advantage in shots with the Blue Jays collecting 9-of-14 corners in the game.  Kilgore went the distance and posted five saves to collect the shutout, while Smith had five stops for the Spartans.

Johns Hopkins will return to action on Wednesday, September 24 when the Blue Jays welcome Messiah to Homewood Field.
