BALTIMORE, MD – Visiting Lebanon Valley rode a pair of first half goals to a 2-1 win over Johns Hopkins in the first-ever meeting between the two. The Blue Jays fall to 2-3-2 on the season while the Dutchmen improve to 4-1-1.
Lebanon Valley opened the scoring in the 17
th minute off the foot of Ben Ammon. Will Burton took a pass from Ammon and then centered the ball to Nathan Prex. He backheeled the ball to Ammon, who fired a shot from 15 yards out into the top center of the goal. The Dutchmen doubled their lead in the 24
th minute when Ethan Groff made a run up the right side before crossing the ball to Prex, who slid in and poked home the ball at the left post.
Hopkins cut the deficit in half just five and a half minutes into the second half.
Connor Wilkes was fouled in the box, drawing a penalty kick for the Blue Jays. For the second straight game,
Scotty Coleman stepped up and buried his shot from the spot to make it 2-1. Both teams had chances in the ensuing 39 minutes, but the score would remain 2-1.
JHU finished with a 12-8 advantage in shots and a 5-4 edge in corners.
John Ghanem and
Simon Turner split time in the goal, finishing with two saves and one save, respectively. Ryan Simonette made four saves to earn the win for the Dutchmen.
Hopkins returns to Homewood Field on Saturday, September 20 against Swarthmore. The Centennial Conference opener is slated for a 12:00 pm start. JHU will honor the 50
th anniversary of the 1975 Final Four team at half time of Saturday's game.
