GAMBIER, OH –
Sean Vaghedi scored the game's only goal in the 74
th minute and
John Ghanem made eight saves as 18
th-ranked Johns Hopkins beat host and 13
th-ranked Kenyon, 1-0, Friday night. The Blue Jays improve to 2-1-0 while the Owls slip to 1-1-1.
It took until midway through the second half before either team could break through and it was the visitors that did so. The Blue Jays earned an indirect free kick in the box after an Owls' pass back to the goalie. Set up just a yard inside the box,
Giulian Laudisa touched the ball forward and Vaghedi blasted it through the Kenyon wall and into the top right of the goal.
The Owls turned up the pressure and fired off six shots in the final eight and a half minutes as they looked for the equalizer. Ghanem made three of his career-high eight saves in the final four minutes to preserve the shutout.
Hopkins earns its first win, in just the second meeting, over Kenyon. The two met last year at Homewood Field, with the Owls scoring the game-winner with just eight seconds to play.
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday as the Blue Jays visit the sixth-ranked Denison Big Red. The game is slated for an 11:00 am start at Kienzle-Hylbert Stadium.
