Hopkins Tops Washington College, 4-1, to Put Weiler on History's Doorstep

Blue Jays Win Fifth Straight to Improve to 9-1-2

CHESTERTOWN, MD – The 22nd-ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team picked up its fifth consecutive victory – all of which have come in Centennial Conference play – as the Blue Jays topped Washington College, 4-1, Saturday afternoon.  The win improves the Blue Jays record to 9-1-2 overall and 5-1 in Centennial Conference, while the Shorewomen slip to 5-6-1 overall and 0-4 in the Centennial.

The four goals, a season-high for the Blue Jays, were split evenly between the first and second half for Johns Hopkins, which grabbed a one-goal lead less than 10 minutes into the game, increased the lead to 3-0 seven minutes after halftime and inched head coach Dan Weiler closer to history.  More on that later.

Junior Carolyn Johnson led the Blue Jays in goals a year ago with 12 and pulled into a tie for the team lead this season when she netted her fourth of the year 9:29 into the game.  Johnson collected a feed along the wing outside the box and lofted a ball over the head of Washington College goalie Olivia Allen inside the far post to opening scoring.

The one-goal lead held until the final minute of the first half, when the Blue Jays took advantage of a free kick from straight on and just outside the box.  There, senior Caroline Marcus ripped her offering past the four-person wall and the outstretched hands of Allen to double the lead.

Any hopes for a comeback by the Shorewomen were dashed in the 52nd minute, when Marcus struck again.  This time, it came courtesy of a Natalie Kokena corner kick that found its way through traffic on the near post to Marcus, who redirected it home.

The Shorewomen, who scored a come-from-behind win at Johns Hopkins last season, temporarily grabbed some hope in the 69th minute when Ruby Lane was able to solve Johns Hopkins goalie Ella Kruntchev from 10 yards out off an assist from Kaileigh Brady.

There would be no repeat this season as Johns Hopkins reestablished its three-goal lead just four minutes later on Gwen Rauvola's fourth goal of the season off a nifty pass from freshman Addi Dauler, who blindly lifted a ball into the middle of the box and right to the foot of Rauvola, who wasted no time slotting home the insurance goal.

The Blue Jays outshot the Shorewomen 20-9 and took five of the seven corners awarded in the game.  Kruntchev was forced to make just one save in the victory, while Allen made eight stops in just under 73 minutes before departing after the Rauvola goal.

Weiler.  Did we mention Johns Hopkins head coach Dan Weiler?  Or history?  Or both?

Today's win is the 99th for Weiler as the head coach at Johns Hopkins as he improved to 99-14-12 since taking over in March 2020 (first season was 2021 due to the COVID pandemic).  Simple math tells you that Weiler needs just one win to reach 100 at Johns Hopkins.  His first crack at that will come a week from today, when his Blue Jays welcome Franklin & Marshall to Homewood Field.

But there's more to the Weiler story than reaching 100 wins at Johns Hopkins.  With one more win, he will have won 100 games at three different schools – Concordia Morehead, Christopher Newport and Johns Hopkins.  That seems … what's the word I'm looking for?

Historical?

Yes, you could say that.

How historical?  With one more win, Weiler will become the first soccer coach in NCAA history – at any level of men's or women's soccer – to win 100 games at three different schools.

Historical?  Yes, you could say that.
