BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team jumped out to 5-0 lead in Saturday's game against Charles Street rival Loyola, held off a Greyhound rally that twice trimmed the margin to two and then used a six-goal run that bridged the second and fourth quarters to fuel a 13-7 victory at Homewood Field. The win improves the Blue Jays' record to 3-0, while the Greyhounds slip to 0-2.
On a day when both coaching staffs wore lapel pins to honor late Siena coach
Liam Gleason, it was the bookending five and six-goal Blue Jay runs that proved to be the difference in the 62
nd renewal of the series.
Johns Hopkins scored the opening five goals in less than 10 minutes with a pair of
Charlie Iler strikes and single goals from
Chuck Rawson,
Matt Collison and
Hunter Chauvette providing the offense, while sophomore
Joe Hobot continued his strong start at the X as he fueled a 6-of-8 first-quarter faceoff showing for the Blue Jays.
Loyola answered with a three-goal run that started with a
Brady Quinn goal at the 4:23 mark of the first quarter and was capped by a
Brad West unassisted strike with 10:20 showing on the second-quarter clock.
The Blue Jays halted the Loyola spurt when Collison got to the goal from the wing with 8:57 remaining in the first half and
Jimmy Ayers added his fifth goal of the season just 55 seconds later to make it 7-3.
Loyola's final push came in a span of less than 90 seconds a short time after the Ayers goal as
Mason Cook scored back-to-back goals, including one with the 'Hounds a man up, to again make it a two-goal game.
From there, the Blue Jay defense would hold Loyola scoreless for more than 26 minutes and gradually put the game out of reach at 13-5 before the 'Hounds scored twice in the final nine minutes of the fourth quarter to account for the final scoring.
A Rawson extra-man goal just 84 seconds after Cook's second strike ignited the six-goal run for the Blue Jays, who then turned a successful ride as the second quarter clocked dripped under 15 seconds into a
Brooks English tally with seven seconds remaining before the break to make it 9-5.
Back-to-back strikes from
David Disque – the first of his career - and Rawson in a 62-second span before the third quarter was five minutes old pushed the margin to six (11-6) and Collison and Chauvette would add the final Blue Jay tallies in Hopkins' third consecutive win against the Greyhounds.
While the offense was methodically extending the lead from late in the second through early in the fourth quarter, the Blue Jay defense was busing doing its part at the other end. The Greyhound scoreless streak reached 26:08 before Cook added his third of of the game midway through the fourth quarter, but the Hopkins defense allowed just 14 second-half shots and freshman
Dash Lamitie was equal to eight of the 10 Loyola offerings that were on cage in the final 30 minutes.
