Johns Hopkins Wins Double Overtime Thriller at Duke

DURHAM, NC – McKenzey Craig scored with just three seconds on the shot clock to lift Johns Hopkins to a 14-13 double-overtime win over Duke on a rain-soaked Koskinen Stadium Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays improve to 3-0 while the Blue Devils fall to 1-2.

Late in the third quarter, there were no signs that the game would head to overtime, but Duke scored seven unanswered to force the extra time. Tied at five at the half, Hopkins erupted for an 8-2 third quarter to take a 13-7 lead. Paige Willard got things going when she scored off a feed from Ava Angello 2:58 into the quarter. That ignited a run of five goals in just three minutes and 26 seconds. Angello took a pass from Taylor Hoss, tiptoed the crease and beat Hope Schoudel low. Willard followed with back-to-back goals before a Sienna Chirieleison sidearm rip put the Blue Jays up 10-5.

Ava Biancardi ended the run with an unassisted tally at the 7:40-mark. The Blue Jays answered with three goals in just over three and a half minutes to go up 13-6. Craig scored in transition with a pin-point feed from Willard. Hoss scored from the right alley 63 seconds later and Angello punctuated the run with a bouncer off a failed Duke clear with 1:31 to play in the third.

Biancardi once again ended the run, scoring with 61 seconds on the clock to make it a 13-7 game. That ignited the home team's 7-0 run. Bella Goodwin opened the fourth with back-to-back goals and the lead was four midway through the quarter. Duke scored four goals in the final 3:09 of the quarter, including the game-tying goal from Quinn Whitaker with 31 ticks on the clock.

The teams traded possession in the first overtime and Willard nearly won it late, but her shot hit the post with six seconds left. Hopkins got a stop on Duke's first possession of overtime and Craig won it when she cut across the crease, took a pass from Chirieleison, turned and fired home the winner.
The first 30 minutes were a back-and-forth affair. Duke grabbed an early 2-0 lead with goals from a pair of Biancardi goals in the opening three minutes. Hopkins got on the board at 9:55 when Hoss found Zoey Smith in the slot for the quick score. The Blue Jays then got back-to-back free position goals from Lacey Downey and Hoss to go up 3-2. The teams then traded goals over the ensuing 18 minutes, and they went into the locker room tied at five.

Hoss (2g, 4a) and Willard (4g, 2a) led the Blue Jays with six points each. Willard is the first freshman with six points in a game since Angello did so on March 7, 2023. Angello (2g, 2a), Chirieleison (1g, 2a) and Craig (2g) also had multi-point games. Reagan O'Brien led the defense with five caused turnovers and picked up three ground balls. Downey added five ground balls and three caused turnovers to go with her goal.

Pronti paced the Blue Devils with six points (1g, 5a) while Biancardi scored a game-high five goals. Whitaker added four goals while Ellie White notched 14 draw controls.

Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, February 21 at 11th-ranked Penn. Opening draw at Franklin Field is slated for 3:30 pm.

Notes: Hoss and Willard are the first pair of Blue Jays with at least six points in a game since Ashley Mackin (8) and Hoss (7) turned the trick at USC on March 16, 2025 • Craig is the first JHU freshman to score an overtime winner since Angello on April 18, 2023.
