BALTIMORE, MD – The 10
th-ranked Johns Hopkins baseball team delivered its second straight 21-run outburst Friday afternoon, defeating Cairn, 21-1, at Babb Field at Stromberg Stadium to improve to 4-1 on the season. It marks the first time since 2008 that the Blue Jays have scored 20 or more runs in back-to-back games.
Starting pitcher
Ryan Anderson picked up right where he left off, earning his second win of the season with 5.0 shutout innings. The right-hander allowed just one hit while fanning seven.
Anderson retired the side in order in the first inning, striking out the final two batters he faced in the frame. The Blue Jays' offense wasted no time backing him up. On the fourth pitch of the game,
Jacob Harris drove a ball deep to right field to bring home the game's first run. With the bases loaded later in the inning,
Lukas Geer put the ball in play to extend the lead to 2-0.
Hopkins broke the game open with a seven-run second inning.
Aaron Bock led off with a solo home run, and with two outs, consecutive singles by
Alex Shane,
William Jaun and Geer stretched the advantage to 6-0. Bock, batting for the second time in the inning, was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and
Shane Keough followed with a two-run single to push the lead to 9-0.
With Anderson cruising through the Highlanders' lineup, the Blue Jays added three more runs across the third and fourth innings. In the third, Geer lined a two-out, two-run double to center before
Clay Hartje followed with an RBI single to make it 12-0.
Hopkins extended the margin to 15-0 in the fourth after Shane drew a bases-loaded walk, Jaun recorded an RBI groundout and Hartje added a sacrifice fly. Anderson struck out the final batter he faced to complete his afternoon before the Blue Jays capped their scoring with a six-run sixth inning.
Campbell Framke delivered a pinch-hit RBI double,
Hamilton Adams followed with an RBI single, and with the bases loaded,
Aidan Collins and
Aaron Monzon each drew walks to force in runs.
Quinn Robbins added an RBI single and
Tate Stearns was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 21-0.
Cairn broke up the shutout in the top of the eighth with an unearned run.
The Hopkins pitching staff was sharp throughout. Four relievers combined to toss the final four innings, allowing just one unearned run on one hit and one walk.
Connor Henk led the group with two strikeouts.
The Blue Jays return to action Saturday, February 28, when they host Hamilton College at Babb Field at Stromberg Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
