Pimental, Stadler Advance to Day Two of NCAA Regional Championships

Blue Jay Duo Guaranteed of Top-Eight Finishes

EWING, NJ – Johns Hopkins junior Freddy Pimental (149) and sophomore Duncan Stadler (133) both remain alive after the first day of the NCAA Region 3 Championships at TCNJ on Friday.  The Blue Jays amassed 18.5 points and sit in 17th place in the team standings, while host TCNJ totaled 97.5 points on day one to grab the lead in the race for the team title.

Pimental earned the number eight seed and topped ninth-seeded Sam Teti of Ursinus, 9-4 in his opening match.  He used two takedowns and trio of escapes to fuel his victory against Teti.  Pimental then fell to top-seeded and second-ranked Thomas Monn of McDaniel to slip into the consolation bracket, where he secured his second-day spot with a 15-7 major decision of Marymount's Adonis Ippaguirre.  Pimental outscored Ippaguirre 10-1 in the second period to turn a 3-0 lead into a 13-1 advantage and held off a third-period push by Ippaguirre to advance.

Pimental will meet fifth-seeded Jason Giordano of TCNJ in his first match on Saturday.  He is guaranteed of a top-eight finish.

Stadler's path to day two came entirely through the consolation bracket as he fell to sixth-seeded Caiden Heller of Messiah in his opening match before rallying for three consecutive wins.  He topped Steven Harris of Alvernia, 10-4, to get his run going; Stadler trailed 4-3 entering the final period, but used two takedowns and a penalty point in the third to advance.

Stadler then used a 21-5 technical fall of Muhlenberg's Max Rotter and a 7-2 decision of Blaise Verdino of Ursinus to move on to day two. Stadler scored seven takedowns in the win against Rotter and a late takedown while nursing a 4-2 lead locked up the win against Verdino.  The win against Verdino also avenges a 15-1 regular-season loss for Stadler.

Stadler will meet Eastern's Jake Orrell in his first match on Saturday.  Like Pimental, he is guaranteed at least two matches on Saturday and a top-eight finish.

Senior Jacob Pomykata (285) narrowly missed on advancing to Saturday as he fell one win shy.  Pomykata fell to top-seeded and fourth-ranked Logan Flynn of Arcadia in his opening match, but bounced back with a second-period pin of Marymount's Basheer Hadi before dropping a 7-2 decision to sixth-seeded Sam Taylor of Gettysburg to end his run.
