BALTIMORE, MD – A
Matt Collison goal with seven seconds remaining in the first half tied Saturday's game between Johns Hopkins and Navy at 6-6 and sprung an 8-2 run that turned a 6-5 deficit into a 13-8 lead in what eventually became a 14-10 Blue Jay victory in the 95
th all-time meeting between the two teams. Johns Hopkins improves to 5-2 on the year with the win, while the Midshipmen slip to 5-3 with the loss.
Johns Hopkins led 5-2 after Collison scored back-to-back goals in a 39-second span midway through the second quarter, but the Midshipmen answered the second of his two goals with a
Paul Garza strike just over two minutes later. It then took Navy less than three minutes to turn the 5-3 deficit into a 6-5 lead as Mac Haley,
Alec Gregorek and
Aydan DiRocco all scored to quickly give the Midshipmen the lead with 81 seconds remaining before halftime.
The one-goal Navy lead appeared to be two as the clock dripped under a minute remaining in the half as the Midshipmen won the faceoff after the DiRocco goal and got what looked like an
AJ Marsh goal with 59 seconds showing. However, as the goal was being scored, the Mids were called for an illegal procedure infraction and the Blue Jays capitalized.
Collison got free in the high slot just before the half and
Brooks English threaded a feed that Collison converted into his third goal of the first half.
Attackman
Hunter Chauvette and
Charlie Iler added goals in the first four minutes of the second half to make it 8-6 and
Sean Crogan rifled a shot on the run just under the crossbar to give the Blue Jays a three-goal lead midway through the period.
Navy's
Jack Ponzio halted the Blue Jay run with an unassisted goal in transition after a
Dan Daly save with 4:38 remaining in the period, but freshman
James Rost answered with his first career goal for Johns Hopkins just 31 seconds later and Chauvette capped his hat trick just 58 ticks after that when he swept across the top of the box and went low to beat Daly from 12 yards.
Back-to-back Iler goals, the first late in the third quarter and the second just 76 seconds into the fourth, extended the lead to a game-high five at 13-8, but Navy would turn a pair of failed clears by Johns Hopkins into goals from Gregorek and Haley before the final period was six minute old to trim the deficit to 13-10.
The pivotal next goal wouldn't come for nearly seven minutes. Blue Jay goalie
Oran Gelinas made two saves and Navy turned the ball over three times in that stretch and Johns Hopkins also turned it over twice before Collison finally ended the drama with his fourth of the day, an unassisted strike with 2:37 remaining, to seal the victory.
Johns Hopkins Notes of Interest
• Collison and Iler both scored four goals and Chauvette added three. This is the first time since March 30, 2024 against Michigan that Hopkins has had three players score three or more goals in a game (
Johnathan Peshko,
Garrett Degnon,
Russell Melendez).
• Gelinas finished with 12 saves. He has posted exactly 12 saves in each of the last three games.
• The Blue Jays have scored 13 or more goals in all five of their wins this season.
• The Blue Jay defense held Navy scoreless for stretches of 15:17 and 11:43. In seven games, JHU has now held the opposition scoreless for a stretch of 10 minutes or longer 10 times; six of those 10 stretches have been 15 minutes or longer.
• Today's win was the 200
th all-time for Johns Hopkins against a team currently competing in the Patriot League. All but 27 of those 200 have come against Navy (65), Army (56) and Loyola (52).
Navy Notes of Interest
• Gregorek (3), Haley (2) and DiRocco (2) combined to score seven of Navy's 10 goals.
• Daly posted nine saves on the day with all nine coming in the first three quarters.
• The Midshipmen won 18-of-28 faceoffs on the day with
Colin Shadowens (9-of-13) and
Zach Hayashi (9-of-15) combining for all 18 wins and 10 ground balls.
