HILTON HEAD, SC – Johns Hopkins dropped a 5-0 decision to fourth-ranked Wesleyan as the Blue Jays opened its Spring Break trip in Hilton Head, SC. The Blue Jays slip to 1-3 on the season while the Cardinals improve to 6-2.
Wesleyan swept the doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Lara Afolayanka and Agnes Guggenheim won 6-3 over
Ava Li and
Kamila Wong at two doubles. Lucinda Gatsiounis and Leila Epstein then clinched the point with a 6-4 over
Sydney Langer and
Lia Melvin at one. And at three, Mariia Kornilova and Kendall Smith won 6-3 versus
Claire Loftus and
Sahana Madala to complete the doubles' sweep.
Afolayanka gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead when she beat Wong 6-3, 7-5 at three singles. Kornilova then won 6-2, 6-2 at four over Loftus and Epstein clinched the win with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Melvin at number one. Smith pushed the lead to 5-0 with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Madala at six. Two and five singles went unfinished.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, March 18 versus ninth-ranked Babson in Hilton Head.
