ORANGE, CA – Johns Hopkins picked up its second straight win on its trip to California on Thursday evening as the Blue Jays beat the host Chapman Panthers, 6-1. JHU improves to 5-2 on the season while Chapman falls to 4-6.
The Panthers grabbed the first win of the match, when Matthew Dewey and Seif El Salaway beat
Dylan Blenkiron and
Pranav Gadiraju, 6-1, at three doubles. But the Blue Jays answered with wins at one and two to grab the doubles' point.
Allen Gong and
Chakor Rajendra beat Aram Izmirian and Ben Jorgensen, 6-4, at one. The doubles' point would come down to court two and it was
Mukundh Boopathi and
Joshua Kim taking the win, 7-6 (5).
Gong and
Brian Yi quickly gave Hopkins a 3-0 lead in the match as the two finished in quick succession. Gong won 6-2, 6-2 over James Krantz at two singles and Yi won by the same score versus El Salawy at five. Gadiraju then clinched the win when he beat Adrian Daoust 6-2, 6-3 at six.
Chapman picked up a point when Ian Jordan won 7-5, 6-3 over Boopathi at four singles. Blenkiron responded with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Dewey at three. Rajendra then closed out the win when he came from behind to beat Izmirian at one. He dropped the first set 6-4 but answered with a 6-2 win in the second and then won a third-set tiebreak, 10-6.
Hopkins returns to action on Friday, March 20 versus seventh-ranked Bowdoin in the opening round of the Stag-Hen Invitational. The match is scheduled for a 10:00 am start in Claremont, CA.
