Johns Hopkins Rallies to Beat 16th-ranked Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, CA – Johns Hopkins won a pair of three-set matches to come from behind to beat host and 16th-ranked Pomona-Pitzer, 4-3, Wednesday. The Blue Jays improve to 4-2 while the Sagehens fall to 7-5.
 
Pomona swept the doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead into singles. Leo Rocca and Kiran Vairavanathan took the first win of the match with a 6-1 decision over Mukundh Boopathi and Joshua Kim at two. Drew Goldman and Jayanth Mallampati then clinched the doubles' point when they won 6-4 over Allen Gong and Chakor Rajendra at one. Neil Chulani and Samuel English then grabbed a tight 7-6 win over Dylan Blenkiron and Pranav Gadiraju at three to close out doubles.
 
Goldman pushed the Sagehens lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Gong at one singles. Rajendra answered at two, beating Rocca 7-6, 6-0 to make it a 2-1 match. Boopathi then beat English 6-4, 6-4 at four to knot the match at two. Tanner Ige grabbed the lead back for Pomona with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Jason Li at five.
 
But the Blue Jays weren't done. Blenkiron dropped his first set 6-3 at three, but responded with a 7-5 win in the second and then grabbed the win with a 6-0 third set. Then, for the third time this season, Kim won at six singles to clinch a come-back win for Hopkins. Kim won his first set 7-6 (5), but Chulani forced a deciding set with a 6-2 win in the second. Kim answered with a 6-2 win in the third to grab the win for Hopkins.
 
Hopkins returns to action on Thursday, March 19 at Chapman. The match is scheduled for a 2:00 pm start.
