Lacey Downey have been named Tewaaraton Award nominees the Tewaaraton Award Foundation announced Thursday night. The Blue Jays' three selections are tied for second most in the nation. This is the first time in program history that Hopkins has had multiple nominees for the Tewaaraton.
Founded in 2001, The Tewaaraton Award, presented by Stifel, is an annual honor recognizing the most outstanding American college lacrosse men's and women's players. The women's selection committee is composed of 17 current college coaches and is led by chair and USA Lacrosse National Lacrosse Hall of Fame coach Alicia Groveston, as well as vice chair Chris Sailer.
Angello ranks sixth in the nation in goals (55) and ninth in points (77). She also ranks 10
th in the Big Ten in assists (22). She has notched at least four points 11 times this season, including a career-high-tying 11 points in the win over USC. Angello has twice outscored JHU's opponents this season. She ranks fourth all-time in Johns Hopkins history in career points (288), second in goals (213) and ninth in assists (75). In addition, she is fourth among active players nationally in career goals and fifth in points.
O'Brien is the national leader in caused turnovers (60) and caused turnovers per game (4.62). She also ranks second in the Big Ten and seventh nationally in ground balls per game (3.46). O'Brien broke the 25-year-old NCAA single season record in 2025 and finished the season with 103. She enters the final week of regular season with 226 career caused turnovers, two shy of second and nine shy of the NCAA record. O'Brien also ranks seventh in program history with 168 career ground balls.
Downey is having a breakout season in 2026 as a two-way midfielder. She ranks 11
th in the nation in points (76), 16
th in caused turnovers (36) and 17
th in assists (35). She is also tied for first in the nation with 17 free position goals, which rank third in program history. Downey leads all midfielders in the nation in points and assists. Her 76 points are the most by a midfielder in program history, while her 35 assists are tied for the most. In addition, she has already broken the program record for career assists by a midfielder (65), in just her 35
th game.
Five men's and five women's finalists will be announced in early May. The Tewaaraton Award recipients will be chosen after the conclusion of the collegiate lacrosse season. The Finalists will be honored and this year's recipients announced live on May 28 at the Tewaaraton Ceremony in Washington, D.C.
