PHILADELPHIA, PA – The Johns Hopkins women's track and field team opened competition Thursday at the prestigious Penn Relays, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania, recording two top-25 finishes and several performances that rank among the best in program history and Division III this season.
 
Erika Ezumba delivered the highlight of the day in the hammer throw, opening competition for the Blue Jays with a dominant performance. Competing primarily against Division I athletes, Ezumba captured the event title with a personal-best throw of 58.77 meters. Her mark sets a new Hopkins and Centennial Conference record and currently stands as the top throw in Division III this season.
 
Phoebe Williams added a 13^th-place finish with a personal-best mark of 51.41 meters, which ranks second in both program and conference history and 22^nd nationally in Division III this season.
 
Hopkins also saw strong performances in the steeplechase, as Cooper Brotherton and Eleni Alvarez posted top-35 finishes. Brotherton placed 30^th in 10:46.99, a time that ranks 14^th in Division III this season. Alvarez followed closely in 31^st with a personal-best 10:50.88, which ranks seventh in program history and 17^th nationally this season.
 
Carter Brotherton rounded out the Blue Jays' competitors on day one, placing 37^th overall in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:36.33. She was the top Division III finisher in the event.
 
Hopkins returns to action Friday, April 24, splitting squads between the Penn Relays and the Carpenter-Case Invite, hosted by McDaniel.
