Johns Hopkins Tops Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 4-0

BALTIMORE, MD – Sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins opened the NCAA Tournament with a 4-0 win over RPI in the second round Saturday morning. The Blue Jays improve to 13-6 while the Engineers end their season at 13-8.
 
Hopkins grabbed the doubles' point with wins at two and three and the Blue Jays led at one when the match was halted. Claire Loftus and Sahana Madala dropped just one game as they beat Gauri Muiyil and Kaaviya Kannan at three. Sophia Kim and Lia Melvin then secured the point with a 6-2 win over Victoria Sarabosing and Kayla Wheeler at two. Ava Li and Kamila Wong led 5-2 at one over Anushka Jaiswal and Nicole Ridenour.
 
At one singles, Melvin won four straight games to claim a 6-5 lead in the first set before Ridenour retired to give the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead. Sahana Sanjeev followed with a straight sets win at three singles. She rallied from a 4-1 deficit to win the first set 6-4 and then took the second, 6-2.  Sydney Langer clinched the win for Hopkins with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Kannan at six.
 
Madala and Isabel He were each up a set in their matches at four and five singles when Langer clinched the match. Muiyil was up a set for the Engineers at two when the match ended.
 
Hopkins will take on the winner of Carnegie Mellon and Case Western Reserve on Sunday. The match is scheduled for 11:00 am with the winner earning a spot in the NCAA Quarterfinals.
