BALTIMORE, MD – Winston Earle, longtime Johns Hopkins men's soccer assistant coach, passed away this week at the age of 78. Earle spent three decades as an assistant under three Blue Jay head coaches before his retirement in 2022.
A native of Kingston, Jamaica, Earle played at Division I Santos before coming to the United States in the late 1960s. He played for several teams in both the North American Soccer League and American Soccer League from 1968 to 1975. Earle began his coaching career at Bay College of Maryland in 1977 and coached at Baltimore Community College, Morgan State and Coppin State before coming to JHU.

Earle joined Mark Butler's staff in 1992 and stayed at Homewood for three decades before retiring from
Craig Appleby's staff in 2022. Johns Hopkins posted an impressive 410-121-59 (.745) record during his tenure. The Blue Jays won six Centennial Conference Tournament titles, 10 Centennial Conference regular season titles and made 16 NCAA Tournament appearances, including the 1994 NCAA title game.
In Earle's 30 seasons, Hopkins produced 29 All-Americans, 72 all-region selections and 151 All-Centennial honorees. In addition, six Blue Jays earned Centennial Conference Player of the Year honors and two were named Centennial Rookie of the Year. JHU also produced 14 CoSIDA/CSC Academic All-Americans during his tenure. In 2016, the Blue Jays' annual fall 7v7 alumni game was renamed the Earle Cup Invitational in his honor.
