LEXINGTON, VA – Visiting Johns Hopkins beat host and 18
th-ranked Washington & Lee, 1-0, in a shootout Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays improve to 4-2 on the season while the Generals fall to 3-2, seeing their three-game win streak snapped.
The teams battled through 80 minutes of scoreless action, in which the Blue Jays outshot the host Generals, 20-4. And for just the second time in 21 meetings between the two, the winner would be decided in a shootout.
Zoe Dolfis and
Sarah Chilton each converted on their attempts and it was 1-1.
Jessica Lapidus came up with a stop on WLU's second attempt and then
Caelie Robinson made hers to put JHU up 2-1. Britty Page and
Ada Farmer each scored and it was 3-2 Blue Jays. Lapidus made another stop on the Generals and
Sophia Builione converted on the next attempt to give JHU a 4-2 shootout win.
Aubrey Kilgore played the first half in the cage and did not face a shot on goal. Lapidus came on at the half and made one save through 50 minutes of play before the overtime. Helena Chodakiewicz finished with six saves through regulation and two overtime periods.
Hopkins is now 11-3 all-time in shootouts, including 5-0 under head coach
Jane Wells. In addition, Wells' first win at JHU came in a shootout win at Washington & Lee.
Hopkins returns home to host York in non-conference action on Tuesday, September 22. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 pm start at Homewood Field.
