BALTIMORE, MD – Olivia Miller converted a penalty stroke with 2:08 left in the first overtime to lift York to a 2-1 win over fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins Tuesday on a rain-soaked Homewood Field. The Blue Jays fall to 4-3 on the season while the Spartans improve to 4-3. It is the third straight, and fourth overall, overtime game in the series.
York struck first when Kate Egan tipped in a crossing pass from Aliza Staub at 10:30 in the first quarter. Hopkins battled back and tied the game 14 minutes later as the Jays capitalized on a penalty corner.
Ada Farmer collected the insert from
Sophia Albano, passing across the top of the circle to
Caeli Robinson. She sent a short pass to
Kaitlin Coward in the middle of the circle, and she swept a low shot into the back of the cage.
That would be all the scoring for nearly 44 minutes as the teams played through a scoreless third and fourth quarter and into overtime. As the clock ticked towards two minutes remaining in the first overtime, Kelbie Linebaugh got a breakaway and ultimately drew a penalty stroke. Miller then stepped up and fired a shot into the left side of the cage to win it for the Spartans.
Aubrey Kilgore (four saves) and
Jessica Lapidus (three) combined for seven saves in the cage for the Blue Jays. Maddy Merlack finished with three for the Spartans. Hopkins outshot York, 19-12, while York had an 8-7 edge in penalty corners.
Hopkins opens Centennial Conference play on Saturday, September 26 at Bryn Mawr. Game time is slated for 1:00 pm.
