BRYN MAWR, PA – Johns Hopkins scored five unanswered in the second half to take down host Bryn Mawr, 5-1, in both teams' Centennial Conference opener. The Blue Jays improve to 5-3 overall while the Owls see their six-game win streak snapped as the fall to 6-2.
Bryn Mawr struck first, scoring off a penalty corner with 2:17 to play in the first. Carrie Povich inserted to Julia Ward on the near side of the circle, and she fired a low shot inside the left post. Hopkins answered just 2:30 into the third quarter to tie the game at one.
Evie Hamm collected the
Deedee Golla insert and blasted a shot into the middle of the cage. Just five and a half minutes later, the Blue Jays had the lead.
Ava Zimmerman collected her own rebound and passed to
Sophia Albano on the right post, and she slotted home the go-ahead goal.
Late in the third, Bryn Mawr had a chance to draw even when the home team earned a penalty stroke. But
Aubrey Kilgore made the save on Leya Patel to keep the Blue Jays on top. Just 2:11 into the fourth quarter, the Blue Jays earned a stroke and this time
Sarah Chilton buried it to stake Hopkins to a 3-1 lead.
Hopkins then scored twice in a span of just one minute and 56 seconds late in the quarter to take the 5-1 win. Zimmerman intercepted an Owls' pass deep in their own end and dribbled into the circle before passing to
Kaitlin Coward for the one-timer with 4:04 to play. Albano then scored off a scramble in front of the cage to cap the scoring.
Kilgore finished with four saves in nearly 40 minutes of action in the cage.
Jessica Lapidus played just over 20 minutes and did not face a shot. Sydney Wright notched 10 saves in the loss for Bryn Mawr. Hopkins finished with a 24-7 advantage in shots and an 11-5 edge in corners.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, September 30 at Dickinson. The Centennial Conference contest is scheduled for a 4:00 pm start.
