SWARTHMORE, PA – Host Swarthmore scored the game's only goal with just under 12 minutes remaining as the Garnet edged 17^th-ranked Johns Hopkins, 1-0, in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams Saturday afternoon.  Swarthmore moves to 4-1-1 overall and 1-0 in the Centennial with the victory, while the Blue Jays slip to 4-1-2 overall and 0-1 in the Centennial with the loss.
 
After just over 78 minutes of scoreless action, the Garnet broke through when Amiah Evans played a long ball into the middle of the field that Celia Kanellakos collected in-stride near the top of the box just behind the Blue Jay defense.  Kanellakos one-touched herself towards the middle of the field and fired one just past the out-stretched arms of Hopkins goalie Ella Kruntchev for what proved to be the game-winner.
 
The Blue Jays would press hard for the equalizer down the stretch, but couldn't solve Swarthmore goalie Sofie Aird, who made five of her 11 saves in the game in the final nine minutes, including a point-blank stop of a Caroline Marcus offering with just under three minutes remaining and a final stop off the foot of Terren Davis on a free kick from the edge of the box with less than a minute to go.
 
Johns Hopkins held a 15-8 advantage in shots and had the game's only corner.  Aird finished with the 11 saves, while Kruntchev had three stops to her credit.
 
Johns Hopkins will return to action on Wednesday, September 23 when the Blue Jays welcome McDaniel to Homewood Field for another Centennial Conference game (4 pm).
