FREDERICKSBURG, VA – Johns Hopkins competed at the UMW Kickoff Saturday and Sunday, competing against players from Longwood, George Mason and host Mary Washington. The Blue Jays finished the weekend going 12-15 in singles and 9-4 in doubles.
On Saturday in doubles
Andy Zhu and
Jacob Jiang lost just one game in their win over Keldibek Kozhoev and Mei Yecheng (UMW).
Danny Greene and
Gabe Xu won a tight 7-5 match over Ayaan Choudhary and Cooper Lehman (UMW).
Adam Stavrakas and
Dylan Blenkiron lost a close 6-4 match to Daniel Borisov and Ricards Spaks (LU).
Cole Langer and
Austin He fell 6-2 to Rodrigo Guijarro and Marc Ferrando.
Chakor Rajendra and
Allan Xu earned a 6-3 win over Orry Farnworth and Marko Mrdak.
In singles versus host Mary Washington, Stavrakas won 6-4, 6-2 over Asher Willenborg while Blenkiron prevailed in three sets over Jack Riordan 7-6, 5-7, 1-0 (8). Jiang defeated Ryan Battaglia 6-3, 6-3.
Cyrus Chan dropped a three-setter to Trevor Rein 7-4 (4), 4-6, 1-0 (4). Ryan Gipner topped Rajendra 6-2, 6-3 and Matt Scott won 7-6 (7), 6-1 over Greene. Cooper Lehman won 6-4, 6-2 over Langer and Kozhoev topped
Gabe Xu 6-4, 7-5. Zhu lost a three-setter to Yecheng 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (8). Langer beat Battaglia 6-3, 7-5 while
Gabe Xu fell 6-0, 6-1 to Albert Vladimirskiy. Zhu fell in three sets to Lehman 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (5).
In singles versus George Mason, Stavrakas won his first 6-4 and was up 3-1 in the second when Ekansh Kumar retired. Chan came back to beat Egor Zackarov 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (5). Blenkiron grabbed a 6-4, 6-2 win over Edgar Vilain. Jiang won his first set 7-6 (2) and was up 2-0 in the second when Adria Franco retired. Joshua Vargas won 6-1, 6-4 over Rajendra and Shari Saeed won 7-6 (0), 6-2 over Greene.
On Sunday, JHU matched up against Longwood and Mary Washington in singles. The Blue Jays faced players from Mary Washington and George Mason in doubles.
In singles versus Longwood, Stavrakas fell to Daniel Borisov 6-4, 7-5. Marc Ferrando won 6-2, 6-2 over
Mukundh Boopathi. Blenkiron rallied to beat Marko Mrdak 4-6, 7-6, 1-0 (7). Rodrigo Guijarro grabbed a three-set win over Rajendra 6-7 (4), 6-0, 1-0 (4). Richard Spaks won 6-1, 7-5 over Jiang while Greene beat Orry Farnworth 7-6 (5), 4-6, 1-0 (6). Against the host Eagles, Ayaan Choudhary won in three over Zhu 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (9). Langer beat Yecheng 6-4, 7-5 and He won 8-1 over Kozhoev.
In doubles versus UMW, Greene and
Gabe Xu beat Choudhary and Vladirmirskiy 6-2. Stavrakas and Blenkiron earned a 7-6 (4) win over Riordan and Gipner. Langer and He won 7-5 over Scott and Will Fromherz. Lehman and Evan Fisher won 6-4 versus Greene and
Gabe Xu. Jiang and He defeated Choudhary and Yecheng, 6-3. The Blue Jays then went 2-1 in doubles versus the Patriots. Stavrakas and Blenkiron won 7-5 versus Deniz Okyay and Shari Saeed. Langer and He lost a tight 7-6 (4) match to Kumar and Vilain. He and Zhu then won 6-2 over Novitski and Vargas.
Hopkins returns to action on Thursday, October 1 at the ITA Southeast Regional in Fredericksburg, VA.
