BALTIMORE, Md. -- Johns Hopkins freshman quarterback Zach DiIonno (West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) has been named the Centennial Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts in guiding Hopkins to a 27-9 win at Ursinus last Saturday. He is the second Johns Hopkins player to garner Player of the Week honors this season as sophomore Matt Campbell earned Defensive Player of the Week honors after a 28-7 win over Carnegie Mellon two weeks ago.
DiIonno, who was making his first career start, was 14-of-27 for 180 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in the victory. He also rushed six times for 24 yards in guiding the Blue Jays to their fifth straight win this season and their seventh straight dating back to last season. DiIonno did an excellent job running the offense as he orchestrated four long scoring drives. Hopkins had scoring drives that covered 71, 72, 73 and 90 yards and he repeatedly kept drives alive as the Blue Jays converted 9-of-17 third-downs in the game. For the year, DiIonno has played in two games and is 17-of-34 for 215 yards with the two touchdowns and the one interception.
Johns Hopkins is off to a 5-0 (2-0 Centennial Conference) start for the first time since 1931. The current seven-game winning streak is tied for the longest in school history. Hopkins first won seven straight games in 1892 and later had seven-game winning streaks that bridged the 1948-49 seasons and the 1959-60 seasons. The seven-game winning streak is the longest active winning streak by any team in the Centennial Conference and is also the longest active winning streak by any college football team (NCAA sponsored) in the state of Maryland.
Johns Hopkins will look for its first 6-0 start since 1931 when the Blue Jays host Muhlenberg at 1:00 pm Saturday afternoon at Homewood Field. Muhlenberg (4-1, 2-1 Centennial Conference) defeated Johns Hopkins, 22-14 last season and leads the all-time series, 17-16-1.
