Chestertown, MD - Laura Scimeca scored three goals and Taniel Sisco added two as the Washington College field hockey team defeated No. 18 Johns Hopkins, 5-2, Tuesday afternoon.
The Shorewomen, who improved to 6-6 overall and 3-1 in the Centennial Conference, jumped on the Blue Jays with four first-half goals while shutting out JHU through the period.
Hopkins tried to mount a comeback in the second half, as freshman forward Caite Kappel (Pittsburgh, PA/Sewickley Academy) scored off a feed from sophomore midfielder Anna Rehwinkel (Princeton Junction, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro) to put the Blue Jays on the board with 27:55 remaining. Three minutes later junior defender Ashlee Duncan (Easton, MD/Easton) scored an unassisted goal to cut the Washington lead to 4-2, but Scimeca added an insurance goal for the Shorewomen with 9:26 left to put the game away.
Senior goalkeeper Missi Schafhauser (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) made 15 saves, including 11 in the first half, for the Blue Jays, who fell to 9-5 overall and 4-1 in the league. Hopkins, which had its five-game winning streak snapped, was the only undefeated team in the conference entering today's action. Zina Hense stopped six shots for Washington.
Scimeca gave the Shorewomen the early lead with a goal off an assist from Julie Phillips at the 29:29 mark of the first half, and just over seven minutes later Missy Tine found Sisco for a goal to put Washington up 2-0.
Sisco added her second goal with an unassisted tally with 16:23 left in the period, and Scimeca scored an unassisted goal with 9:50 remaining to give the Shorewomen a four-goal lead at the break.
Washington out-shot the Blue Jays, 21-10, while Hopkins held a 12-6 edge in penalty corners.
The Blue Jays return home Saturday when Hopkins hosts Swarthmore College at Homewood Field in a 1 p.m. game.
