BALTIMORE, Md. -- Fresh off the most successful season in school history, the honors and awards continue to roll in for members of the Johns Hopkins football team. Senior center Kevin Kostibos (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) and sophomore safety Matt Campbell (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) were both named to the 2002 ECAC Division III Southwest All-Star Team which was announced today. The selection to the team is the first for both players.
Kostibos started all four years at center for the Blue Jays and earned Second Team All-Centennial honors as a sophomore before garnering First Team All-CC status as a junior and senior. This season, he started 10 games and helped the Blue Jays average nearly 25 points and over 330 yards of total offense per game. The Blue Jay running game was particularly effective with Kostibos leading the way as Hopkins averaged 185.6 yards per game on the ground.
Campbell led the Blue Jays with 86 tackles on the year, including 39 solos and three for losses. He added seven pass breakups, three interceptions, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery from his safety position in Hopkins' 4-4-3 alignment. In addition, he averaged 6.2 yards on a team-high 18 punt returns. He was the only sophomore to be named to the All-Centennial First Team on defense.
Under the guidance of 13th-year coach Jim Margraff, Johns Hopkins posted a 9-2 record, claimed a share of the Centennial Conference Championship and won the ECAC Southwest title as well. The nine wins for the Blue Jays are a school record, while the Centennial title is the first in school history. In addition, the appearance in the ECAC Southwest Championship Game marked the first playoff game in the history of the program.
