#30 William Paterson Surges Past #21 Hopkins, 15-10

BALTIMORE, MD - William Paterson scored 14 runs in a span of four innings en route to a 15-10 win over Johns Hopkins in non-conference baseball action this afternoon. The Blue Jays fell to 3-1 with the loss, while the Pioneers open their season with a win.

Hopkins jumped out to an early lead scoring twice in each of the first two innings. Sophomore Craig Cetta (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) and junior Joe Urban (Nanticoke, PA/Bishop Hoban) recorded RBIs in the first, and senior Ben Taylor (Pawling, NY/Trinity-Pawling) smashed a two-run home run, his first of the year, in the bottom of the second to give JHU a 4-0 lead.

With JHU holding a 5-1 lead in the top of the fourth, William Paterson batted around and scored six runs to take a 7-5 lead. The first six batters reached base, highlighted by Jesse Cardoza's three-run home run to right field. The Pioneers added two runs in the top of the fifth inning before the Blue Jays tied the game at 9-9 with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Freshman Mike Durgala (Annandale, VA/Thomas Jefferson) hit a solo home run to start the comeback for the Blue Jays.

William Paterson would retake the lead with four runs in the top of the sixth as Ryan Stanek hit a three-run home run and Dan Sherlock added a sacrifice fly to make the score 13-9. The Pioneers extended their lead to 15-9 in the top of the seventh and sophomore Rob Morrison (Malibu, CA/Loyola) capped the scoring for Hopkins with his first career home run in the bottom of the ninth.

Durgala went 3-for-4 on the day with one run and two RBIs, while Taylor scored three runs and added two hits and two RBIs. Sophomore George Merrell (Bloomsburg, PA/Central Columbia) suffered the loss for JHU, and Anthony Mangine picked up the win for William Paterson.

The Blue Jays return to action tomorrow as Hopkins hosts SUNY-New Paltz for a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
