BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins head baseball coach
Nate Mulberg has announced the addition of
Micah Saltzberg and
Philip Bernstein to the Blue Jay coaching staff as assistant coaches. Bernstein will also serve as the program's scouting and recruiting operations assistant.
"We are excited to welcome Micah and Philip to our staff," said Mulberg. "Both bring invaluable experience and energy to the program. Micah's success in player development and team leadership speaks for itself, and Phil's background as a recent player who I was fortunate to coach at Richmond will be instrumental in shaping our team's future. I can't wait for them to get started."
Saltzberg arrives at Homewood with over a decade of baseball experience in both coaching and baseball operations across multiple Division I and Division III programs. Under his leadership, his teams have earned three conference titles and four regional appearances, while producing six All-Americans, three College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-Americans, 23 All-Region selections, 39 All-Conference honorees and a Conference Player of the Year.
Most recently, he served as the Associate Head Coach at Spalding University, where he played a key role in developing the offense. During his tenure, he helped the Golden Eagles achieve a 120-50 (.706) overall record and secure two conference championships. Saltzberg's work helped build an offense that batted .342, averaged 10.3 runs per game and set a school record for home runs in a season in 2025.
"Joining a program with such a strong tradition and commitment to excellence is an incredible opportunity," said Saltzberg, a Baltimore native. "Having the chance to return home and work with Coach Mulberg and the team is very exciting. I look forward to building on the success that has already been established here and contributing to the continued growth of the program."
Prior to his time at Spalding, Saltzberg spent three seasons with Shenandoah University as an assistant coach, overseeing all video programs and player development, while also developing speed, agility and quickness training. His efforts contributed to 169 stolen bases at a 76 percent success rate and helped the Hornets catch 40 percent of would-be base stealers. He also played a key role in Shenandoah's 2022 conference championship and the hosting of an NCAA Regional.
Saltzberg began his professional journey as a manager and video coordinator at the University of Maryland, where he provided logistical and operational assistance and analyzed team statistics and video footage.
He holds a Bachelor's degree in Kinesiology from the University of Maryland and a Master's in Sports Management from Spalding University.
Bernstein brings a strong playing background to Johns Hopkins, having excelled at both the NCAA Division I and III levels. Most recently, he was a two-year starter at the University of Richmond under Mulberg, appearing in 104 games and making 103 starts. He slashed .332/.439/.455, totaling 129 hits, 83 RBIs, 30 doubles, six home runs and 67 walks, helping lead Richmond to an Atlantic-10 runner up finish in 2024 and earned Atlantic-10 Academic All-Conference honors twice. He was also named to the 2024 Jewish Baseball News All-America Team.
"Coach Mulberg was a huge influence on my development as both a player and a person, and I am thrilled to continue working alongside him in this new role," said Bernstein. "I'm excited to bring the same dedication and passion to the vision he and the rest of the staff have for this new era of Hopkins baseball."
In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Bernstein works as a Client Executive in the insurance sector. As a student-athlete, he played four seasons at Hamilton College where he was a three time All-Conference and All-Region selection. Bernstein also earned the 2023 Milton H. Jannone Award for his excellence in athletics, leadership and academics at Hamilton. For the Continentals, he slashed .376/.466/.522 in 84 appearances, making 83 starts. He compiled 121 hits, including 53 RBIs, 18 doubles, seven home runs and scored 101 runs.
