Junior attackman Bobby Benson (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh) tied career-highs with five goals and seven points to lead the No. 4 Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team to a 12-9 victory over No. 15 Ohio State Saturday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Freshman attackman Kyle Barrie (Narberth, PA/The Haverford School) added three goals for the Blue Jays, who won their fourth consecutive game and improved to 7-1 this season. Ohio State had its six-game winning streak snapped and fell to 6-3.
The Blue Jays exploded to a 7-0 lead through the first 18 minutes of the game, but the Buckeyes battled back and a goal by Anthony Gilardi cut the Hopkins lead to 10-9 with 14:01 to play. However, Benson scored an extra-man goal off a feed from sophomore midfielder Kevin Boland (Jessup, MD/Gilman) at the 12:37 mark, and Barrie added an insurance goal just 1:24 later to conclude the scoring.
Freshman midfielder Kyle Harrison (Baltimore, MD/Friends) opened the scoring with an unassisted goal just 2:05 into the game, and sophomore midfielder Joe McDermott (Rockville Centre, NY/South Side) gave the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead 2:33 later when he scored off a Benson pass. Benson then scored the next three goals of the game, all unassisted, to give Hopkins a 5-0 lead at the 14:36 mark of the second quarter.
Exactly one minute later Barrie scored off an assist from sophomore attackman Conor Ford (Timonium, MD/St. Paul's), and 50 seconds after that scored an extra-man goal off a feed from freshman attackman Peter LeSueur (Garden City, NY/Garden City) as the Blue Jays took a 7-0 lead.
The Buckeyes would respond, though, as Curtis Smith and Nick Miceli scored consecutive goals to cut the Blue Jays' lead to 7-2 at the 9:22 mark. Ford put Hopkins back up by six with an extra-man goal off a Benson assist with 8:16 left, but Tom Randisi and Bryan Mulford each scored in the following minute to make it an 8-4 game at the 7:16 mark. Benson and Gilardi each scored extra-man goals late in the half, and Hopkins took a 9-5 lead into the break.
LeSueur opened the scoring in the third quarter with an unassisted goal at the 13:08 mark, but Mike Norton, Gilardi, and Ryan Laffey each scored for the Buckeyes to cut the Blue Jays' lead to 10-8 heading into the fourth quarter. Gilardi scored his third goal of the game just 59 seconds into the final frame to make it a one-goal game, but the Hopkins defense would not allow another goal as the Blue Jays pulled away for the win.
Senior goalkeeper Nick Murtha (Manhasset, NY/Manhasset) made 11 saves in goal for Hopkins, while Tony Russo stopped 13 shots for Ohio State.
The Blue Jays return home Saturday to host Maryland at 3 p.m. on Homecoming.
