Madison, NJ - Drew forward Andrew Loazia scored two goals in a two-minute span in the second half to lead the Drew University men's soccer team to a 3-0 shutout of No. 18 Johns Hopkins Saturday night.
The Rangers improved to 3-1-1 on the season with the win, while Hopkins fell to 4-1 and was shutout in a regular season match for the first time since 1997.
After the start of the match was delayed over an hour due to inclement weather, the Blue Jays controlled the action in the first half but could not get a shot past Drew goalkeeper Peter Boyer. Senior forward Matt Weill (Merrick, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) hit the post twice during the match, and Boyer stopped junior forward Chad Tarabolous (Tulsa, OK/Cascia Hall) on a breakaway.
The Rangers struck first in the 58th minute, as Russel Jaffe collected a ball in the box and fed Loazia, who beat JHU sophomore goalkeeper Gary Kane, Jr. (Lansdale, PA/LaSalle College). Less than two minutes later Loazia sent a free kick into the box that was mishandled by Kane for Drew's second goal.
Drew put the game away in the 70th minute when Justin Breen found Todd Kingston, who beat Kane for the match's final goal. Boyer made just one save to record the shutout, while Kane, returning to action after missing three matches with a hip injury, collected four saves.
The match marked the first time Hopkins had been shutout since a 1-0 loss to Rowan in the 1998 NCAA Quarterfinals, breaking a stretch of 62 consecutive matches with a goal. The last time JHU was shutout in a regular season contest was on October 4, 1997 when Hopkins fell 1-0 at Muhlenberg, 84 matches ago.
The Blue Jays will look to bounce back on Wednesday as Hopkins opens Centennial Conference action with a 4 p.m. match at McDaniel. JHU carries a 20-match regular season conference win streak into the contest.
