BALTIMORE, Md. -- Johns Hopkins sophomore safety Matt Campbell (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) has been named the Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in the Blue Jays' 28-7 win over Carnegie Mellon last Saturday. Campbell is the first Johns Hopkins player (offense or defense) to garner Centennial Player-of-the-Week honors this season and this is the first time he has earned the honor in his career.
Campbell posted a team-high 10 tackles, including five solos and one for a loss, forced a fumble, recovered a fumble and had one interception as the Blue Jays improved to 3-0 and ran their winning streak to five games dating back to last season with the victory over the Tartans. His 37-yard interception return to the Carnegie Mellon two-yard line led to Hopkins' last touchdown. In addition to his exploits in the secondary, Campbell added two punt returns for 19 yards in the win.
Through three games, Campbell leads the team in tackles with 22, including 12 solos and one for a loss. In addition, he has one interception, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and two pass breakups to his credit. He also ranks fifth in the Centennial Conference in punt returns as he is averaging 6.3 yards per return.
Johns Hopkins is off to a 3-0 start for the first time since 1967. The current five-game winning streak is the longest for a Johns Hopkins football team since 1995, when Hopkins won six straight after a season-opening loss. The five-game winning streak is the longest active winning streak by any team in the Centennial Conference and is also the longest active winning streak by any college football team (NCAA sponsored) in the state of Maryland.
Johns Hopkins will look for its first 4-0 start since 1932 when the Blue Jays host Gettysburg at 7:00 pm Friday night. The Blue Jays defeated the Bullets, 14-7 last season and have won seven straight in the head-to-head matchup with Gettysburg. The game will also be the Centennial Conference opener for Hopkins, which has currently won 11 straight league openers.
