BALTIMORE, Md. --- Johns Hopkins sophomore defensive lineman Alan Cody (North Bergan, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) has been named the Centennial Conference Football Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in the Blue Jays' 17-3 win over McDaniel last Saturday. This is the first time in his career that Cody has been selected as the Centennial's Defensive Player of the Week.
Cody tied for the team-lead with six tackles, including one for a loss, in the win over the Green Terror. Cody also forced a fumble on McDaniel's second possession that the Blue Jays recovered at the MC 20-yard line. Four plays later the Blue Jays took the lead for good on a one-yard touchdown run by junior fullback Nate Readal. The Blue Jays limited the Green Terror to 197 yards of total offense, including just 44 through the air. The three points are the fewest McDaniel has scored since Johns Hopkins held then Western Maryland to just three points in a 13-3 win in the 1996 season-finale. That was also the last time the Green Terror failed to score a touchdown.
Cody has started all 10 games for the Blue Jays this season and ranks seventh on the team with 45 tackles on the year. He leads the team with 3.5 sacks and is fourth with nine tackles for losses. He also has three pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble on the year.
With Cody leading the way, the Johns Hopkins defense has been among the nation's best throughout the season. The Blue Jays (9-1) lead the Centennial Conference in scoring defense (6.4), total defense (225.6) and pass efficiency defense (63.11 rating). The Blue Jays rank among the top 10 in the nation in all three categories and led the nation in pass efficiency defense in games through November 8 (rankings for games of November 15 will be released tomorrow).
Johns Hopkins claimed a share of its second straight Centennial Conference title with the 17-3 win over McDaniel. The Blue Jays also tied the school record for wins in a season and set a school record for regular season victories. Since the beginning of the 2002 season Hopkins is 18-3 and the Blue Jays are 20-3 in their last 23 games dating back to the end of the 2001 season.
