BALTIMORE, Md. --- Johns Hopkins junior safety Matt Campbell (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) has been named a First Team All-American by the Division III Sports Information Directors, it was announced today. Campbell is just the second Johns Hopkins football player to earn First Team All-America honors as he joins two-time selection Bill Stromberg (1980 & 1981) in this select company. Junior offensive tackle Matt Weeks (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) joined Campbell on the team as he garnered Honorable Mention status.
Campbell was a unanimous First Team All-Centennial selection this season and also became the first Johns Hopkins player to earn Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Year honors since Harrison Bernstein in 1997. Campbell finished tied for second on the team in tackles (65) and led the team and the Centennial Conference in interceptions with eight. He also had a team-high 11 pass breakups to his credit. Campbell's eight interceptions tied the JHU single-season record and he spearheaded a unit that ranked among the top five in the nation throughout the season in scoring defense and pass efficiency defense. The Blue Jays allowed a total of just 77 points in 11 games and intercepted 28 passes on the year while allowing just two touchdown passes. Campbell was also previously named a Second Team Regional All-American by Football Gazette.
Weeks earned First Team All-Centennial honors this season as he anchored a young Blue Jay offensive line. He became the sixth different Johns Hopkins offensive lineman to earn First Team All-Centennial honors since 1995 and the Blue Jays have featured at least one First Team All-CC offensive lineman in eight of the last nine years. Weeks recently completed his first season as a full-time starter for the Blue Jays and was the leader of a line that features no senior starters. The Blue Jays led the Centennial Conference in scoring offense (28.6) and total offense (386.6) and Hopkins was the only team in the Centennial Conference that averaged more than 175 yards rushing (199.7) and passing (186.9). Weeks was previously named a Third Team Football Gazette All-American and a First Team Football Gazette Regional All-American.
Johns Hopkins won a school-record 10 games (10-1) in 2003 and grabbed a share of a second straight Centennial Conference Championship. The Blue Jays also won a second consecutive ECAC Championship as they defeated King's (PA), 41-13 in the ECAC South Atlantic Championship Game. Under the guidance of head coach Jim Margraff the Blue Jays are in the midst of the greatest run in school history. Hopkins spent nine weeks during the 2003 season ranked in the top 30, seven weeks in the top 25, and five weeks ranked in the top 20. Hopkins is 19-3 since the beginning of the 2002 season and 25-6 since the beginning of the 2001 season.

This is the 26th year that the Division III Sports Information Directors have selected an All-America football team.
