Catonsville, MD - The UMBC swimming teams each defeated Johns Hopkins Friday afternoon at the UMBC Natatorium. The Retriever men topped the Blue Jays, 130.5-97.5, while the UMBC women defeated JHU, 140-75.
The Retriever men improved to 7-3 and the women improved to 9-3 with the wins, while the Hopkins men and women fell to 5-6 and 4-7, respectively.
Senior Scott Armstrong (Medford Lakes, NJ/West Morris Central/Bernards) led the Blue Jay men by winning the 500 freestyle in 4:39.33 and the 1000 freestyle in 9:35.91. Armstrong also finished second in the 200 freestyle in 1:43.87, while junior Kyle Robinson (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional) placed second in the 50 freestyle in 21.44 and senior Justin Brannock (West Palm Beach, FL/Dreyfoos School of the Arts) came in second in the 100 freestyle in 47.46.
Junior Scott Pitz (Paoli, PA/Conestoga) finished second in the 200 breaststroke in 2:10.31, while sophomore J.P. Balfour (Plano, TX/Plano East) placed second in the 200 individual medley in 1:56.96. Additionally, the Hopkins 400 free relay team won its race in 3:14.54, while the JHU 400 medley relay team won in 3:29.54.
The Blue Jay women were led by freshman Abiona Redwood (Kingston, Jamaica/St. Andrew), who won the 50 freestyle in 25.07 and the 100 freestyle in 54.89. Freshman Stephanie Leaman (Grosse Point Woods, MI/Grosse Point North) placed second in the 500 freestyle in 5:23.53, while freshman Jessica Chang (Penfield, NY/Penfield) came in second in the 200 breaststroke in 2:25.83.
