COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Junior Joe McDermott scored his fourth goal of the season with 2:39 remaining in the first overtime to lift top-ranked Johns Hopkins to a 6-5 overtime victory over fifth-ranked Maryland in front of 8,183 at Byrd Stadium Saturday night. The win is the fourth straight for the Blue Jays, who improve to 7-1. Maryland had a three-game winning streak snapped and slips to 7-2.
Maryland gained the initial possession in overtime, but after a turnover and subsequent timeout, Hopkins took over. Kevin Boland worked the ball behind the goal to McDermott, who came around the goal and got a step on his defender. A quick fake and he beat Maryland goalie Dan McCormick up high for the game-winner. This is the second consecutive season the Blue Jays have beaten Maryland in overtime and it's the third straight game between the two teams that has been decided by one goal.
The Blue Jays appeared to have control of the game early in the third quarter when Boland's second goal of the game gave Hopkins a 5-2 lead with 11:05 remaining in the period. However, that would be the last goal the Blue Jays would score until McDermott's game-winner.
Maryland drew to within 5-3 on Justin Smith's seventh goal of the season with just over five minutes remaining in the third quarter and later tied the game with back-to-back goals by Ryan Moran and Dan LaMonica midway through the fourth quarter. Both teams would have scoring chances down the stretch, but McCormick and Hopkins goalie Rob Scherr were strong in goal to send the game into extra time.
After Kyle Harrison and Maryalnd's Joe Walters exchanged goals in the first 6:20 of the game, the Blue Jays took control by scoring four of the next five. Back-to-back goals by Adam Doneger and Boland gave Hopkins a 3-1 lead early in the second quarter, only to have Maryland's Paul Gillette pull UM to within one at 3-2 with a goal at the 10:06 mark of the second quarter.
Kyle Barrie's 21st goal of the season pushed the lead to 4-2, a lead Hopkins carried into halftime, and Boland's tally made it 5-2 less than four minutes into the second half. That set the stage for Maryland's late-game run and, ultimately, McDermott's heroics.
Boland had two goals, McDermott had a goal and an assist and Peter LeSueur added two assists to lead the Blue Jays offensively. Scherr was solid in goal with 15 saves on the night. The Blue Jays also won 10-of-14 facoeffs and won the ground ball war as well, 32-25.
Maryland got a goal and two assists from LaMonica, but no other Terp picked up more than one point. McCormick made seven saves in goal for Maryland.
