Villanova, PA - Blue Jay junior midfielder Heidi Pearce (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew's) scored three goals and assisted on another to lead the No. 19 Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team to an 11-4 win over Villanova Wednesday night at Villanova Stadium.
The Blue Jays, who snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 7-4 this season, took a 6-0 lead into halftime and were never seriously threatened in the second period.
Pearce opened the scoring at the 24:16 mark with an unassisted goal, and freshman midfielder Kelley Putnam (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) added an unassisted marker with 20:57 remaining to give Hopkins a 2-0 lead.
Pearce then found junior attacker Marlena Wittelsberger (Phoenix, MD/Dulaney) for her first goal of the season with 13:46 left, and senior attacker Meghan Burnett (Auburn, NY/Auburn) made it a 4-0 game by scoring a free position goal at the 8:02 mark.
Just 12 seconds later junior midfielder Kate Barcomb (Middlebury, VT/Middlebury) scored an unassisted goal, and 22 seconds after that Pearce scored off an assist from freshman attacker Sarah Walsh (Port Washington, NY/P.D. Schreiber) to close the first half scoring.
Senior midfielder Erinn Dennis (Wilton, NY/Saratoga Springs) gave the Blue Jays a 7-0 lead with an unassisted goal with 25:09 remaining in the game before Meghan Carolan put Villanova on the board with a free position goal at the 24:23 mark.
Freshman attacker Meagan Voight (Sykesville, MD/South Carroll) found senior attacker Liz Holland (Catonsville, MD/Mount de Sales) for a goal with 20:14 to play, but the Wildcats answered with an unassisted goal by Amy Rocap to make it an 8-2 game with 18:30 left.
Freshman attacker Natalie Cooper (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) scored her first career goal on a free position shot with 13:27 remaining, and just 1:19 later Pearce scored an unassisted goal to give Hopkins a 10-2 advantage.
Putnam scored off a feed from Cooper with 11:53 remaining before Lindsey Syphard and Katie Komlo scored for Villanova to close the scoring.
Blue Jay goalkeepers Jen McDonald (Garden City, NY/Garden City), Lauren Riddick (Charlottesville, VA/St. Anne's-Belfield), and Catherine Sawyer (Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) combined to make five saves. Jess McGrattan made seven saves in goal for Villanova, which fell to 4-8 on the season.
Hopkins dominated the game, winning the ground ball battle, 29-18, and holding a 10-7 advantage in draw controls. The Blue Jays scored on 11 of their 24 shots, while the JHU starting defense led by junior Kate Gilland (Medford, NJ/Shawnee), junior Rachel Krom (Summit, NJ/Summit), sophomore Kristen Miller (Towson, MD/Notre Dame Prep), and sophomore Anne Crisafulli (Garden City, NY/Garden City) held the Wildcats to just 12 shots.
Hopkins returns to action Wednesday when the Blue Jays travel to American for a 4 p.m. contest with the Eagles.
