TOWSON, Md. -- The top-ranked Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team out-scored 10th-ranked Towson, 11-0 over the final 26:08 of the game to erase a 9-6 third-quarter deficit and pick up a 17-9 victory over the Tigers at Towson Stadium. The win is the seventh straight for the Blue Jays, who improve to 10-1 on the year and 38-1 in their last 39 games in the month of April. Towson, which had won two straight and five of its last six, falls to 6-5.
Towson had a three-goal lead and all the momentum after Ryan Obloj's unassisted goal at the 11:08 mark of the third quarter. However, after having nine different players score in the first 33:52, the Tigers were held scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Back-to-back goals by Kyle Harrison and Peter LeSueur in a span of 38 seconds midway through the third quarter drew the Blue Jays to within 9-8. That score stood until late in the quarter, when junior Conor Ford netted an extra man goal with 1:02 remaining in the period to pull the Blue Jays even. Bobby Benson put the Blue Jays ahead, 10-9 with an unassisted goal with just 11 seconds remaining in the period after coming from behind the goal and scoring off a scramble.
The Blue Jays wasted little time putting the game away in the fourth quarter as Benson and Kevin Boland both scored in the first three minutes to extend the lead to 12-9. That score stood until midway through the quarter when Hopkins got goals from Benson, Adam Doneger and LeSueur in a span of just 2:25 to push the lead to 15-9 with less than five minutes to play. Late tallies by Doneger and Boland closed the scoring.
Peyton Chane gave Towson an early 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal less than two minutes into the game. The Blue Jays struck for three quick goals in a span of just under two minutes to take a 3-1 lead. Greg Peyser, Kyle Barrie and Boland all scored during the spree, with Boland's goal coming with the extra man.
The Tigers proceeded to grab the momentum by scoring five of the next six goals to take a 6-4 lead. Todd Spear, Casey Cittadino, Ben DeFelice, Brian Myers and Hunter Lochte all scored during the run for Towson before Peyser drew the Blue Jays to within 6-5 with a goal off an assist from LeSueur with 2:15 remaining in the second quarter. Brad Monaco made it 7-5 at the half with a goal with just 49 seconds remaining before intermission.
Towson got off to a quick start in the second half as a Matt Florio extra man goal just 32 seconds into the third quarter made it 8-5. Doneger's first goal of the game was answered by Obloj's tally at the 11:08 mark, but that would end the scoring for Towson.
Hopkins was led by Boland's four goals, while Benson and Doneger each scored three times. Ford added one goal and a career-high five assists, while LeSueur chipped in with two goals and two assists. Rob Scherr registered 12 saves in goal for the Blue Jays, including eight in the second half when Hopkins outscored the Tigers, 12-2.
Chane led the Tigers with one goal and two assists, while Lochte and Obloj each had one goal and one assist. Reed Sothoron made nine saves in goal for Towson, but just one in the fourth quarter when Hopkins outscored the Tigers, 7-0.
Johns Hopkins will next be in action next Saturday when the Blue Jays host Loyola at 3:00 pm. Towson will host Drexel at 7:30 on Wednesday night in the CAA Semifinals.
