BALTIMORE, Md. -- Johns Hopkins junior wide receiver Brian Wolcott (Harding, PA/Wyoming Area) has been named the Centennial Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts in Hopkins' season-opening win over Rochester, it was announced today. This is the first time in Wolcott's career that he has earned Centennial Player-of-the-Week honors and he shared the award with Ursinus senior running back Gary Sheffield.
Wolcott had seven receptions for 149 yards and a career-high three touchdowns to lead Hopkins to the 27-9 win over the Yellowjackets last Saturday. He is the first JHU wide receiver to catch three touchdown passes in a game since Zach Baylin caught three in a 21-14 win over then ninth-ranked McDaniel in the 2001 season-finale. His 149 yards are the second-most ever in a season-opener by a Johns Hopkins player and the third-highest total of his career. Only Baylin's 151-yard effort against Washington & Lee in 2000 was better than Wolcott's in a season-opener.
Wolcott enters this week's game with career totals of 56 receptions for 992 yards and 12 touchdowns. He is tied for eighth on JHU's career touchdown reception list and currently ranks second in the Centennial Conference in receptions per game and first in receiving yards. In his first 15 career games, he didn't have any 100-yard receiving games. In his last six games dating back to last season, he has had 149 or more receiving yards three times.
Johns Hopkins (1-0) will carry a five-game winning streak into this Saturday's home-opener against Washington & Lee (0-0). Wolcott fueled the Blue Jays' 21-14 overtime victory over the Generals last season as his 34-yard touchdown reception with 15 seconds remaining in regulation forced overtime. He then caught a 24-yard pass on the first play of overtime to set up Hopkins' game-winning touchdown.
