BALTIMORE, MD ? Johns Hopkins junior running back T.J. Lyons (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) and sophomore place-kicker Ben Scott (Pittsburgh, PA/Shady Side Academy) have been named the Centennial Conference Offensive and Special Teams Players-of-the-Week, respectively, for their efforts in Hopkins' 20-14 win at Franklin & Marshall last Saturday. Lyons is the second Johns Hopkins player this season to be named the Centennial Conference Offensive Player-of-the-Week, while Scott is the first Blue Jay to garner Special Teams Player-of-the-Week honors.
Lyons rushed 37 times for 173 yards and one touchdown and added six receptions for 83 yards and another score against the Diplomats. The 173 rushing yards were just one shy of his career high of 174, which came in a 23-21 win over Gettysburg during his freshman year. In addition, his 256 all-purpose yards, 83 receiving yards and six receptions were all career highs, while the two-touchdown game was just the second of his career.
Lyons jumped to 14th on JHU's career rushing list with his 173-yard effort as he now has 1,393 career rushing yards. He also became just the sixth player in school history to rush for 170 or more yards more than once. He currently ranks third in the Centennial Conference in rushing (91.0 ypg.) and second in all-purpose yards per game (119.2).
Scott nailed both of his extra points and 2-of-3 field goals in the win, while he also averaged 39.2 yards on his six punts with two of the six being downed inside the 20. His 42-yard field goal midway through the second quarter was the longest of his career and the longest by a Johns Hopkins kicker since Matt Andrade hit a 42-yarder against Ursinus on October 6, 2001. Scott hit his first two field goals against F&M and both of his extra points before missing a 31-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. That miss snapped an impressive streak of 28 consecutive successful kicks (21 extra points and seven field goals) for Scott.
Through five games Scott is tied for first in the Centennial Conference in extra point percentage (1.000 / 15-of-15), ranks first in kick scoring (6.0 ppg.), field goals (5) and field goals per game (1.00) and is tied for third in overall scoring (6.0 ppg.).
Johns Hopkins is currently 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial Conference. The Blue Jays will next be in action on Saturday when they play at Gettysburg (0-5, 0-1 CC).
