ELIZABETHTOWN, PA - Junior Manbaj Gill (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) scored the tying goal in the 89th minute and Johns Hopkins advanced past Elizabethtown with a 5-3 advantage in penalty kicks after two overtimes of an NCAA second-round game at Ira R. Herr Field.
In a battle of the Blue Jays, Hopkins (17-0-2) and Elizabethtown (15-3-4) were scoreless for 63 minutes until Etown's leading scorer Brian Healy scored off an assist from Andrew Kummerer. Healy's 12th goal of the year came during a scramble for the ball after an indirect kick set up by Hopkins' 11th team foul. It was just the fourth goal allowed by Johns Hopkins goalie Gary Kane, Jr. (Lansdale, PA/La Salle) and the fifth goal surrendered by the Blue Jay defense this year.
Johns Hopkins, which took 11 shots, had several scoring opportunities throughout the game but the Elizabethtown defense adjusted in front of keeper Edwin Tichenor. Two Hopkins shots that got past Tichenor were deflected, including one with 2:11 to play.
A minute later, Stephen Walsh (Cork, Ireland/Colaiste An Spioraid Naoimh) found Gill, who fired a 20-yard shot past that same defense to tie the game 1-1 and force overtime for the second time in the last three Hopkins' games. The teams finished even in shots (11) while Johns Hopkins edged Elizabethtown in corner kicks (6-3).
Johns Hopkins took a 2-0 lead in penalty kicks as senior Doug Pollack (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) and Walsh both sailed their shots in the upper right corner of the goal, and Kane, Jr. saved Etown's first attempt by Kummerer.
Elizabethtown then converted two shots to make it 3-2 but Hopkins junior Jeff Grosser (Beach Haven, NJ/Shawnee), Gill and sophomore Moath Hamzeh (Clarksville, MD/River Hill) sunk three straight for the final 5-3 advantage.
Johns Hopkins advances to the NCAA Sectionals next weekend, either Nov. 19-20 or Nov. 20-21, at a site and time to be determined. The Blue Jays face third-ranked Salisbury, which also advanced on penalty kicks after a 1-1 tie with Arcadia.
