Baltimore, MD - Freshman Mary Key (Stevensville, MD/St. Mary's of Annapolis) scored a game-high five goals while senior Heidi Pearce (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew's-DE) added three goals and an assist as the ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team cruised past Villanova, 18-3, Wednesday night at windy Homewood Field.
The Blue Jays, who improved to 11-1 on the season, wasted little time in taking control by scoring seven goals in the first 20 minutes of the game. Sophomore Meagan Voight (Sykesville, MD/Liberty) scored just 23 seconds into the contest, and Key made it a 2-0 game with a goal at the 28:00 mark. Voight then scored off an assist from freshman Steph Janice (Medford, NJ/Shawnee), and after junior Erin Riordan (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) found Pearce for a goal, Key added two more to put Hopkins up six with 15:12 left in the half.
Senior Marlena Wittelsberger (Phoenix, MD/Dulaney) found sophomore Natalie Cooper (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) for a goal with 10:22 left before Bess Hanley put the Wildcats on the board with a goal at the 7:54 mark. Cooper and Pearce then scored unassisted goals 11 seconds apart as the Blue Jays took a 9-1 lead into halftime.
Riordan opened the second half scoring with a goal off an assist from Janice just 31 seconds into the period, and Key scored off a Pearce feed 57 seconds later to put Hopkins up 10. Freshman Alex Nolan (Baltimore, MD/Roland Park) then found sophomore Molly Burnett (Auburn, NY/Auburn) for a goal with 26:20 to play, and Pearce and Riordan added goals to make it a 14-1 game with 17:28 remaining.
Becky Gardner scored for Villanova, but Wittelsberger answered with an unassisted goal with 13:53 on the clock. Cindy Koza responded with a goal for the Wildcats, but Nolan, Key and Janice each scored in the final 7:44 to close the scoring.
Sophomore Lauren Riddick (Crozet, VA/St. Anne's-Belfield) made six saves and allowed two goals in 47 minutes of action for the Blue Jays, while junior Catherine Sawyer (Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) stopped two shots and gave up one goal in the final 13 minutes. Wildcats goalkeeper Jessica Brozena stopped 13 shots while allowing all 18 goals for Villanova, which fell to 1-12 and lost its 12th straight game.
Junior Lacey-Leigh Hentz (Hempstead, MD/North Carroll) led the Hopkins defense by posting five ground balls, four caused turnovers and two draw controls, while senior Rachel Krom (Summit, NJ/Summit) added four ground balls.
The Blue Jays return to action Sunday with a 12 noon game at sixth-ranked Duke.
