Weeks, Campbell Garner Preseason All-America Honors

July 23, 2004

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Johns Hopkins senior offensive lineman Matt Weeks (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) and senior safety Matt Campbell (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) have been named to several preseason All-America teams, while the Blue Jays are ranked in the preseason top 25 by one publication. Johns Hopkins posted a school-record 10 wins last season en route to grabbing a share of the Centennial Conference title. JHU also won the ECAC South Atlantic Championship in 2003 and is 19-3 over the last two years.

Weeks has been named a preseason First Team All-American by both Lindy's and Football Gazette, while garnering Second Team All-America status from d3football.com. As a junior Weeks was named to a pair of All-America teams as he garnered Honorable Mention honors from the SIDs, while he was a Third Team All-America selection by Football Gazette. He started all 11 games last season for the Blue Jays and was a unanimous First Team All-Centennial selection. He helped the Blue Jays average 28.6 points and 386.6 yards per game. JHU was the only team in the Centennial Conference that averaged over 175 yards rushing and passing in 2003.

Campbell, the reigning Centennial Conference Defensive Player-of-the-Year, has been named to four different preseason All-America teams. He was named to Street & Smith's and d3football.com's First Team Preseason All-America team, while he has garnered Second Team honors from Lindy's and Football Gazette. Campbell tied for second on the team with 65 tackles last season, while pacing the squad with eight interceptions. His eight interceptions tied the JHU single-season record, while he ranks third all-time at Hopkins with 14 career interceptions.

Campbell is already one of the most decorated players in school history. In addition being named the 2003 CC Defensive Player-of-the-Year Campbell has also twice earned First Team All-Centennial honors. He also became just the second player in school history to earn First Team All-America honors (joining 2004 College Football Hall of Fame inductee Bill Stromberg) when he garnered top honors from the SIDs last season (the SID's All-America team is the longest continuous running Division III All-America team). He was also a Second Team Associated Press Little All-America selection and a Third Team d3football.com All-American.

In addition to the individual honors Johns Hopkins is also ranked 22nd in Lindy's Preseason top 25, while the Blue Jays are the second team listed under the "Best of the Rest" outside of Street & Smith's Preseason top 25. The Johns Hopkins-Hampden-Sydney game, scheduled for Homewood Field on November 6, is one of the top 25 games of the year in Division III according to Lindy's. Hampden-Sydney posted a 9-1 record last season and is ranked 13th by Street & Smith's and 18th by Lindy's.
