Baltimore, MD - Junior Meredith Shifman (South Orange, NJ/Columbia) made five saves but the Blue Jays got only three shots off the 19th-ranked field hockey team in the nation as Gettysburg defeated Johns Hopkins 3-0 at Homewood Field. The Bullets improved to 5-2 overall and 3-0 in the Centennial Conference while the Blue Jays fell to 2-6 overall and 0-1 in the league.
After a 30-minute rain delay, Gettysburg came out strong defensively and held Johns Hopkins to just one first-half shot. The Bullets missed their first two shots but Maura Downey put Gettysburg on the board in the 15th minute when she scored her team-high fifth goal of the season off a pass from Meg Goddu.
Shifman made three first-half saves to keep the game within reach for the Blue Jays, who trailed 1-0 at the break.
Gettysburg's Bridget Seidel, the team leader in points, scored the second goal of the game 10 minutes into the second period after rebounding Goddu's shot, which was saved by Shifman. The Bullets sealed the win with Kelly Mishler's goal, another put-back, in the 58th minute.
Gettysburg out-shot Johns Hopkins 10-3 overall and led in penalty corners 7-5. Sophomore Leah Dudley (Westborough, MA/Westborough) had two shots for the Blue Jays while Anna Rehwinkel (Princeton Junction, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro) took one shot.
Katherine Corkhill made two saves for the Bullets in their fourth shutout of the season.
Johns Hopkins returns to the field this weekend when they travel to Muhlenberg on Friday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. and to Scranton at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
