Lyons Honored by Centennial Conference

Oct. 10, 2005

LANCASTER, PA - Johns Hopkins senior running back T.J. Lyons (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) has been named the Centennial Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts in Saturday's 19-7 win over Franklin & Marshall at rain-soaked Homewood Field. Lyons' selection marks the fifth time this season the Blue Jays have had a player honored by the Centennial as Player of the Week, although this is the first for an offensive player. Lyons shares the honor this week with Gettysburg running back Tom Sturgess.

Lyons rushed 25 times for 149 yards and one touchdown in the win over the Diplomats. His 58-yard run on Hopkins' first offensive play of the game was the second-longest run of his career and set up a first quarter field goal that gave the Blue Jays the lead for good. The 149-yard effort marked the sixth 100-yard rushing game of Lyons' career and represents his third-best rushing performance. He previously rushed for a career-high 174 yards against Gettysburg as a freshman and 173 yards against Franklin & Marshall last season.

Lyons currently ranks second in the Centennial Conference in rushing yards per game (89.8) and his 5.6 yards per carry is the highest in the league. He also ranks fourth in the league in all-purpose yards per game (103.8) and his four touchdowns on the year are tied for third in the Centennial.

With his 149-yard effort against Franklin & Marshall Lyons moved into sixth place on the all-time rushing list at Johns Hopkins and, in the process, became just the sixth player in school history to top the 2,000 career rushing yards mark. Lyons now has 2,024 career rushing yards and needs just 110 yards to move into fifth place on the all-time rushing list at Johns Hopkins.

Johns Hopkins ran its winning streak to nine games and improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the Centennial Conference with the win over F&M. The nine-game winning streak is the second-longest in school history. The Blue Jays will host Gettysburg (2-3, 1-0 CC) on Friday night (7:00 pm) in a showdown of the only two teams in the Centennial Conference that have yet to lose a league game.
