BALTIMORE, MD - Sophomore substitutes Megan Rainey and Amanda Garbart each scored once as Washington College defeated Johns Hopkins 2-0 in a Centennial Conference field hockey matchup at Homewood Field. The Blue Jays out-shot the Shorewomen 14-6 and earned 20 more penalty corners but could not capitalize in their first loss of the month and first loss at home this season.
Johns Hopkins fell to 8-6 overall and 5-2 in the Centennial Conference, while Washington improved to 4-10, 3-4 CC.
The Shorewomen scored their first goal after 23:20 of action when sophomore Rachel Miller assisted Rainey's first goal of the year. Miller got her own rebound after a save by Hopkins junior Dayna Eng and then slid a short pass to Rainey for the score.
Washington led 1-0 at the break despite trailing Johns Hopkins 9-4 on shots and 12-2 on penalty corners. Sophomore Erin O'Brien made five saves for the Shorewomen, while Eng ended the half with two.
Garbart secured the win for Washington with her second goal of the season, coming off another assist by Miller with 10:02 remaining in the game. The Blue Jays held the Shorewomen to just two second-half shots but could not convert on the other end of the field, where three shots missed the goal and another three were stopped by O'Brien.
Johns Hopkins, which entered tonight's game in third place in the Centennial Conference standings, has three more games to determine its fate in the postseason. The Blue Jays visit Bryn Mawr, winless in the conference, this Saturday, October 22 at 1 pm. Hopkins' final home game of the regular season is October 29 at 5 pm, when #2 Ursinus comes to Homewood.
