BALTIMORE, MD - Three different players scored for Ursinus as the #2 field hockey team in the nation defeated Johns Hopkins 3-1 in the final 2005 regular-season game at Homewood Field. The Bears (16-2, 10-0 CC) are the top seed and host of the Centennial Conference tournament, while the Blue Jays (9-8, 6-4 CC) earned the #4 seed and will host #5 Franklin & Marshall in the first round on Wednesday, November 2.
Junior Molly Stevens scored the first goal for Ursinus at 25:30 off an assist from senior Ashley Ettinger. Hopkins answered quickly when freshman Adair Landy, who missed the last two weeks with an injury, got past the Ursinus defensive line and found senior Caite Kappel waiting on the left side of the goal for a shot past Ursinus keeper, sophomore Jessica Lamina. Kappel's team-high seventh goal tied the game at one at 26:57.
Ursinus scored once more to take a 2-1 lead into the break, as junior Karen Wendler assisted freshman Jenni Moore for the Bears' second goal. Ursinus led 13-3 on shots and 5-2 on penalty corners at halftime.
The Bears made it 3-1 just three minutes into the second half when freshman Kait Sutherland scored unassisted after a scramble in front of the net. Ursinus led 3-1 at 38:04 and held on for the win. The Bears finished ahead on shots, 19-5, and on corners, 10-2.
Junior Dayna Eng stopped 11 Ursinus shots and had several diving saves on potential Bear goals, while Lamina needed just two saves to pick up her 15th win of the year.
Hopkins secured the #4 seed when Franklin & Marshall defeated Swarthmore and Muhlenberg downed Washington College earlier today. The Blue Jays host the Diplomats, who they defeated 7-0 on October 8, this Wednesday, November 2 (time TBA).
