LANCASTER, PA - Johns Hopkins senior defensive back Adam Colicchio (Martinsville, NJ/Immaculata) has been named the Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in Hopkins' 35-14 victory over Dickinson last Saturday. Colicchio is the second Johns Hopkins player to earn Centennial Defensive Player of the Week honors this season and this is the second time in his career he has earned the award.
Colicchio posted eight tackles, had two interceptions and forced a fumble in the win over the Red Devils. His forced fumble late in the second quarter was returned 31 yards for a touchdown and he later added a 33-yard interception return for a touchdown to help put the game away late in the third quarter. His two interceptions match his career high and his interception return for a touchdown was the first for a Johns Hopkins player since September 29, 2000 against Gettysburg. This was also the first time since that win over Gettysburg that the Blue Jay defense has scored two touchdowns in a game.
After four games Colicchio counts 16 tackles, two interceptions, two pass breakups and one forced fumble to his credit. As the only returning starter in the secondary he anchors a Johns Hopkins defense that currently leads the Centennial Conference in scoring defense (6.8), rushing defense (112.5), passing defense (103.0) and total defense (215.5). The 27 points Johns Hopkins has allowed are the second fewest allowed by a Blue Jay team through four games since 1960.
Johns Hopkins (4-0, 1-0 Centennial) will return to action this Saturday when the Blue Jays host Franklin & Marshall (2-2, 1-0 CC) at Homewood Field. The Blue Jays and Diplomats were picked to finish first and second, respectively, in the 2005 Centennial Conference Preseason Poll.
