Hopkins' Sanders Named to AFCA Good Works Team

Sept. 14, 2005

BALTIMORE, MD - Johns Hopkins senior defensive back Jim Sanders (North Lima, OH/South Range) is one of 11 Division I-AA, II, III and NAIA football players who have been named to the 2005 American Football Coaches Association's (AFCA) Good Works Team. Two 11-man teams, a Division I-A Team and a combined Division I-AA, II, III and NAIA Team, were selected. Sanders is the first Johns Hopkins player to be named to the team since its inception in 1992.

Nominations for the Good Works Team were submitted to the AFCA, which in turn selected the two 11-man teams. Nominees must be actively involved and committed to working with a charitable organization, service group or involved in other community service activities.

Sanders completed an internship with the Johns Hopkins University Center for Summer Learning during the summer of 2004. In his role he designed and implemented educational enrichment activities for 30 underprivileged children. He collaborated with the staff to integrate reading and math activities into the program's daily schedule. For his efforts he received 300-hour AmeriCorps Service Award.

After his experience during the summer of 2004 he took on the role of recruiting supervisor for the Johns Hopkins Center for Summer Learning. Beginning in January of 2005 he evaluated applications and interviewed worthy candidates for the Center's Teach Baltimore program. He had additional responsibilities with advertising and recruiting for the summer program.

In addition to his work with the Center for Summer Learning, Sanders is an active member of his church group (Federated Orthodox Christians of America - F.O.C.A). In his role with F.O.C.A he has helped organize national conventions, national basketball and bowling tournaments, fund-raising activities and volunteer activities. Prior to enrolling at Johns Hopkins he was also a Key Club Volunteer. Among the activities he was involved with were assisting at local nursing homes and working with the Salvation Army.

Sanders spent his freshman year at Johns Hopkins working with a third-grade boy with cerebral palsy. He worked with the youngster to complete daily exercises and increase his muscle strength and coordination.

A three-year letter winner, two-time member of the Centennial Conference Football Academic Honor Roll and a 2004 CoSIDA District II Academic All-American, Sanders is the starting safety on the 2005 Johns Hopkins football team. He spearheads a unit that has allowed just seven points in two games and is allowing an average of just 176.5 yards per game. He has four tackles, one pass breakup and one interception to his credit through two games and has been a member of three straight Centennial Conference Championship teams and three straight ECAC Championship teams. The Blue Jays have compiled a 30-5 record since Sanders arrived in 2002 and are 2-0 this season.

Sanders is majoring in biomedical engineering, entrepreneurship and management. He boasts a 3.48 cumulative grade point average, is the football team's representative on the Johns Hopkins Student Athlete Advisory Committee and is interning this year at the Phoebe R. Berman Bioethics Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
