LANCASTER, PA - Johns Hopkins junior place-kicker/punter Ben Scott (Pittsburgh, PA/Shady Side Academy) has been named the Centennial Conference Co-Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts in the Blue Jays' 9-6 win at Carnegie Mellon last Saturday, it was announced today. Scott shared the honor with Gettysburg's Nathan Smith.
Playing in the shadow of the house he grew up in, Scott hit all three of his field goal attempts in the win over the Tartans, including a game-winning kick from 24 yards out as time expired. He had opened the scoring in the second quarter with a 45-yard field goal and added a career-best 46-yarder early in the fourth quarter. Scott, who also averaged 39.8 yards on eight punts in the game, tied the Johns Hopkins record for field goals in a game with his three against Carnegie Mellon. Prior to this season there had been just three instances where a Johns Hopkins kicker had made three field goals in a game. Scott has now done it twice in three games this year as he also hit three in JHU's 9-7 win over Rochester in the season-opener.
Scott has now made 7-of-9 field goals and all three of his extra-point attempts this season. He leads the Centennial Conference in field goals made (7) and field goals made per game (2.3), ranks second in kick-scoring (8.0 points per game) and is tied for third in overall scoring (8.0 ppg).
Scott's impressive start to the 2005 season has pushed him among the all-time leaders in school and Centennial Conference history. His 24 career field goals rank second all-time in school history and sixth all-time in Centennial Conference history. In addition, he ranks third all-time among JHU place-kickers in points scored (111) and his seven field goals are the most ever for a Hopkins kicker in a three-game span.
Johns Hopkins (3-0) is off this week and will return to action next Saturday (October 1) at Dickinson as the Blue Jays open Centennial Conference play against the Red Devils (1-2).
