BALTIMORE, MD - Johns Hopkins and Drew entered tonight's game with identical records and remained equal after 110 minutes, as the teams tied 2-2 in a non-conference matchup at Homewood Field. With the tie, both teams stand at 5-1-2 overall, while the Rangers hold a slight edge in the series history, 3-2-3.
Freshman Matthew Carlson gave the Blue Jays an early lead, scoring off an assist from senior Edmond Wybaillie in the seventh minute. Drew managed to tie the score before halftime, as junior Brian Dempsey scored his first goal of the year with just 3:41 remaining in the period.
The teams were equal not just on the scoreboard but also on the stats sheet, where Drew and Hopkins each took four shots and had two saves. The Blue Jays led 2-1 on corner kicks.
In the second half, Drew out-shot Johns Hopkins 7-2 but missed its first six opportunites. On the other end, junior Blaine Phillips scored the go-ahead goal for Hopkins when he rebounded his own shot off the post and fired another into the empty goal. The Blue Jays led 2-1 with 30:36 to play and held on until the final three minutes.
Senior Derek Swanner, Drew's leading scorer and last year's Freedom Conference Player of the Year, tied the game at 87:40 when his shot deflected off Hopkins' keeper junior Dan Coble and ricocheted into goal. Neither team scored in the final 2:20, as Johns Hopkins entered its second overtime game this week.
The Blue Jays prevented the Rangers from taking a single shot in the first overtime, and they had three shots on goal, including two headers by senior Travis Davis, but Drew senior Dan Biggers made all three saves to maintain the 2-2 tie. Drew had the only scoring opportunity of the second overtime period.
The Rangers finished with a 12-9 lead on shots, while the Blue Jays had a 6-4 advantage on corners. Coble and Biggers each made five saves in goal.
Johns Hopkins returns to the field this Wednesday, September 28, at 7 pm when it travels to Gettysburg for its third Centennial Conference game of the year.
