LANCASTER, PA - Johns Hopkins junior place-kicker/punter Ben Scott (Pittsburgh, PA/Shady Side Academy) has been named the Centennial Conference Special Teams Player of the Week, it was announced today. Scott enjoyed the finest game of his career in the Blue Jays' 9-7 season-opening victory at Rochester Saturday afternoon.
Scott hit 3-of-4 field goals to tie the Johns Hopkins record for field goals in a game (his effort marks the fourth time a Hopkins kicker has hit three field goals in a game). Included in his three successful kicks were a career-long 45-yarder to open the scoring and a 37-yarder with one second remaining in the fourth quarter that secured the win.
Scott also averaged 43.0 yards on four punts and drilled a school-record 75-yard punt early in the fourth quarter. His 75-yard boot surpasses the previous Hopkins record of 74 yards, originally set by Eddie Miller against Western Maryland in 1948 and matched by Joe Cowan against Ursinus in 1968.
In addition to tying the school record for most field goals in a game, Scott also jumped past Matt Andrade (1999-2001) into second place on JHU's career field goals list. Scott now has 20 field goals in his career and trails just Todd Bencivenni, who made 29 field goals during his career from 1994-97, on JHU's career list.
Johns Hopkins (1-0) will return to action next Saturday at Homewood Field when the Blue Jays host Randolph-Macon (0-1) at 1:00 pm.
